MAY THE SPEED FORCE BE WITH YOU: Savitar and Speed Force explained

Posted by Vikram Sharma
The CW's Flash is on mid-season break. We already have got a good look on the big bad of the season- Savitar, the Hindu God of speed. We have learnt a lot about him. Although Savitar is from comics and not the show's original creation like Harrison Wells is. There are couple of key differences from its comic's counterpart.

Savitar in TV show.
Even  though he is trapped in the Speed Force, he still calls himself the Speed God. As according to him, one only needs to just make people believe that one is a God to be worshiped as a God. As the seasons of The Flash has progressed through years, they have deepened the mythology of the Speed Force. It works different from that in comics.

Speed force in comics:
Speed force in comics was not a big concept until Mark Wade's run. Before that writers used to give speed to different Flashes and speedsters through different ways. For example, Max Mercury got his powers through magic, while speedsters like Jesse Quick and Johnny Quick gets their speed from speed formula. Similarly , the Rival , the Reverse Flash of Jay Garrick's era got his speed from velocity 9 serum.

After the arrival of the idea of Speed force, it changed the nature of the Flash's powers.

In the show, the concept is simplified in terms that only good speedsters derive their power from the speed force. But these speedsters have different capacities of using the speed force. Like Wally West is progressing really fast in using his powers. So it can be said that not all speedsters are made equal. In the show, the speed force has these beings in its continuum who has this divine plan and Barry is their instrument of using it while in comics it is just an energy.

Savitar in comics got his powers when his plane got struck with lightning. He was a pilot in the cold war era. His original name in comics is unknown. He took Savitar as his name and began to run havoc testing his new powers of speed. He fought with Max Mercury when he got the taste of Speed force and got drunk with Speed force and began worshiping it.

But the big thing was that he was not connected the way how Wally West( in comics) was. All Savitar could do was to steal speed from other speedsters. Only Wally was left to fight him. Wally overcame his mental barriers to access speed force to an even greater potential and ran Savitar in speed force. Since Savitar was not connected to speed force like Wally was. So he got trapped in the Speed force.

In the show, Savitar got his powers from the philosopher stone and not from the Speed force like Barry did. One of my predictions is that Barry will overcome his mental barriers and will run fast enough to defeat Savitar. Thus having the arc which Wally West had in comics. Since Savitar is not connected as Barry is connected to the Speed force. No matter how much stronger he is, he is still locked up in Speed force.
Tell me guys what you think about these differences?
